Frequently asked questions

Is a 3% raise good?

A 3% raise is about average in most years — it roughly keeps pace with typical inflation (2–3%), so your purchasing power stays flat. Anything above 3% is generally considered a good raise, while 5% or more is strong.

How do I convert my salary to an hourly rate?

Divide your annual salary by 2,080 (40 hours × 52 weeks). For example, $60,000 ÷ 2,080 ≈ $28.85 per hour. The calculator above does this conversion automatically.

What’s the difference between a raise and a bonus?

A raise permanently increases your base salary, so it compounds into every future paycheck and future raise. A bonus is a one-time payment on top of your current salary that does not change your base pay.

How often should I expect a pay raise?

Most companies review pay once a year. If you consistently perform well, it is reasonable to ask for a raise annually — and after promotions, new responsibilities, or strong results, a 5–10% increase is a fair target.
