Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between EAN-13 and UPC-A?
EAN-13 is the global retail standard with 13 digits, used in the UAE, UK, EU and almost everywhere outside North America. UPC-A is the 12-digit standard used in the US and Canada. An EAN-13 is effectively a UPC-A with a leading zero, so most modern scanners read both.
Do I need to calculate the check digit myself?
No. Enter 12 digits for EAN-13 (or 11 for UPC-A) and the generator computes the final check digit automatically. If you enter the full 13 or 12 digits, the tool validates your check digit and warns you if it is wrong.
Can I use these barcodes on Amazon?
Amazon requires a genuine GTIN (a unique EAN-13 or UPC number registered with GS1) for most categories — a barcode image alone is not enough. If you already own a GTIN, this tool generates a correct, scannable barcode image from it.
What is CODE128 used for?
Code 128 encodes any text — letters, numbers and symbols — so it is used for shipping labels, inventory, asset tracking, serial numbers and ID cards. It is the right choice when you do not need a retail GTIN.
